Why I Posted A Half-Naked Picture of Myself With My Company’s Logo On It On Facebook & Twitter

07.18.11 Posted in Marketing by seanMeverett

If you’re reading this, then it’s very likely that I reached your attention (maybe twice now , potentially created a visceral emotional reaction, and maybe even offended you.  But at what cost, did it communicate the right message, and how many people still didn’t care or even noticed that it happened?  I mean, the picture [...]

Soft Language — Never use hard words like:  always, very, never, extremely, or recommend. When necessary, it may potentially be beneficial to use words like:  suggest, perhaps, potentially, sometimes, often and may. We, Not I — We are a team, and so anything we say in written or oral form must express that. The only [...]

The Meaning of Life, As Told By A Homeless Singer

06.15.11 Posted in Marketing by seanMeverett

After witnessing one of the closest people in my life pass from cancer, a few childhood friends losing their parents to cancer, and seeing the home where I was born and raised ravished by floods, I’m thinking and soul searching more than ever. What is the meaning of life? We’ve all asked that question. I [...]

Customer Service

04.27.11 Posted in Marketing by seanMeverett

It’s like a battery. You really don’t care about it until it stops working. Rules: Branding — Seemingly every company, large or small, tries to position themselves on “great customer service”. So you’re saying you want your company’s brand to be a commodity? Heart — If it doesn’t come from the heart, why even start? [...]

If All Knowledge Were Destroyed Except for One Sentence, What Would It Say?

04.23.11 Posted in Marketing by seanMeverett

Richard Feynman famously asked: “If, in some cataclysm, all of scientific knowledge were to be destroyed, and only one sentence passed on to the next generations of creatures, what statement would contain the most information in the fewest words?” “The same mathematics of networks that governs the interactions of molecules in a cell, neurons in [...]

Introduction to the Income Statement for Non-Finance Geeks

04.19.11 Posted in Marketing by seanMeverett

Concept The concept of the income statement is actually pretty easy to understand and you’re likely already familiar with it: Sales – costs = income It’s just like your bank account. When you get paid from your job, that’s like sales (or more formally, revenue). When you blow part of your income buying out your [...]

What I’ve Learned About Marketing in 3 Sentences

Humor — There’s a reason eTrade continues to use the baby in their commercials. Sex — [...]

What Type of Business Do You Want to Start?

04.07.11 Posted in Marketing by seanMeverett

I have a few rules: No Debt — If you’re exploring a capital intensive business and need to raise debt to fund it, my question is why?  Why would you take the financial risk of the business not working out?  Examples include large inventory expenses for retail or manufacturing operations (unless you can pre-fund it [...]

Everyone’s An Employee, Everyone’s A Manager

04.06.11 Posted in Marketing by seanMeverett

Instead, we decided to let the team be entirely self-managed. There’s still a [...]

Things I’ve Learned About Consumer Behavior…For Startups

I thought I’d write down a few operating principles I’ve come up with over the years, before my alzheimers kicks in. Hopefully, I can continue to add to and refine this list over the years. You’ll likely not agree with all of these, but it represents a summary of my experiences, my formal education, anecdotal evidence, and a bit of hocus pocus I’ve seen work. Let’s dig right in, shall we?

Selling Online

Storytelling

03.09.10 Posted in Inspiration, Marketing, Motivation by seanMeverett

You stumble upon a dark cave lit only by faint, flickering torch light. As your eyes start to adjust, you notice a group of people shackled to the wall, and discover they’ve been here their entire lives, never experiencing natural sunlight.

You feel it’s your duty to unshackle these men and women so they can escape the confines of the darkness. You move towards the man closest to you and furiously try to unshackle him from the wall while excitedly telling the group about the “outside”. He, as well as the group, is a bit startled by your strange dress and confusing descriptions.
